Arsenal sent a scout to Roma’s Champions League qualifier against Porto to check on defender Kostas Manolas, according to the Daily Mail.
As the Gunners’ search for a centre-back reaches the final week of the transfer window, representatives were on hand to see Roma beaten 3-0 by the Porutuguese side as they crashed out of the Champions League 4-1 on aggregate.
The 22-year-old has played 88 games for Roma following a move from Olympiacos in 2014.
The Gunners’ search for a centre-back has reached crisis point ; the chances of completing a move for Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi looking bleaker by the day.
Valencia boss Pako Ayestaran said: ‘Mustafi is not for sale and he will stay at Valencia. The market is open and there are still possibilities. But Mustafa is not for sale.’
That has led the club to consider alternatives. West Brom’s Jonny Evans is a serious fall-back option and now the club are considering reviving their interest in Manolas, though whether Roma would be willing to sell remains to be seen.
