Steven Spielberg wants Idris Elba to be cast as the first black James Bond character. An opinion Elba doesn’t seem to share.
“I am a huge Bond fan,” Spielberg said. “I would love to see a Bond of color. That would be my first choice. I think Idris would be my first choice of Bond if Daniel decides not to come back.”
Spielberg has been tipped as the next director for the Bond’s franchise as former director Sam Mendes stepped down after directing two Bond movies.
Paul Greengrass was also rumored to be the next in directorial-line for the follow-up of Spectre but he has dismissed the reports as false which leaves the spot open for Spielberg.
The highly celebrated movie-director behind box-office movies such as Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, and Jaws was rejected from directing the Bond series twice by James Bond boss, late Cubby Broccoli.
Maybe this is Spielberg’s third strike. If he gets the slot, Idris Elba could stand a very good chance of making history as the first black James Bond.
Spielberg revealed his rejection, “After Jaws, which was a huge phenomenal success, I thought, ‘Hey, people are giving me a final cut now and offering me all kinds of movies…’ and the first movie I wanted to make was a Bond film. I offered Cubby my services and he didn’t think I was right for the part. Even after Close Encounters (of the Third Kind) came out and was a big hit I tried to get on a Bond film. Once again, he didn’t think I was right for the part.”
Daniel Craig has said he would “rather slash his wrists” than return to the world of fast cars and shaken not stirred martinis upon wrapping last film Spectre, which was his fifth Bond project.
Meanwhile Idris Elba disclosed his disinterest in taking over from Craig in an interview with Good Morning America, “I keep saying if it were to happen it would be the will of a nation because there hasn’t been any talks between me and the studio about any of that. But everywhere I go people want that to happen, so.”
He added, “If I’m really honest man, I think I’m too old for that man, running around in cars and ladies and martinis, who wants to do that?”
Is Elba too old for James Bond at 43?
Other male stars linked to take over from Craig include Tom Hiddleston,Thor; Aidan Turner; Then There Were None, James Norton, War & Peace; Henry Cavill, Superman; Tom Hardy, Mad Max: Fury Road; Jason Statham, Furious 7; and Damian Lewis, Homeland.
