A lawmaker representing Orelope in Iseyin/Itesiwaju constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Gideon Aremu, is said to have been assassinated by unknown gunmen on Friday evening.
Confirming the unfortunate tragedy, a source disclosed that the gunmen trailed the lawmaker to his residence in Egbeda Local Government Area of the state, using a motorcycle, before shooting sporadically at him.
Also confirming the report, the spokesman of the state police command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said investigation into the assassination had already begun.
Ajisebutu said, “I can confirm that the incident happened late yesterday, and the police have swung into action.”
“The commissioner has deployed human and material resources in tracking down the culprits. We can assure the public that very soon, we will apprehend those behind this cruel act. We equally want to appeal members of the public who have information that will help our course to come forward. Please don’t hesitate.”
Until his death, Aremu was the only opposition lawmaker in the constituency, as his other nine colleagues are from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
