There are strong indications that the prisoners who escaped last week from Kuje Prison in Abuja have been found and rearrested by security officials in the country.
Sahara Reporters quoted a source as saying that the arrested jailbirds are being held at the Department of State Services (DSS) Headquarters in Abuja, even as scanty reports have it that prison staffs abetted the escapees in the act of jailbreak.
However, the source did not make available information on where the escaped prisoners were arrested or their condition at the time of arrest.
Meanwhile, the Medium Prisons Officer, Musa Tanko has been removed from office on the order of Controller-General of Prisons Ahmed Jafa‘aru after two inmates escaped last Friday.
According to The Punch, Tanko will be grilled by officers from the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) over the escape.
The escapees, Maxwell Ajukwu and Solomon Amodu, were standing trial for murder, but managed to escape by scaling the fence enclosing the prison.
A source said, “For now, only the officer in charge [Mr. Tanko] has been transferred out of the prisons, but we don’t know if other senior officers like the yard master and the officer on duty would also be redeployed out of Kuje prisons. For now, everyone is waiting with bated breath to see the next line of action by the authorities.”
It was learnt that another officer had taken over at the Kuje prisons following Tanko’s redeployment.
