84 Dead After Lorry Runs Through Crowd In Nice – Bastille Day celebrations in France have been marred after what has been deemed a terrorist attack left scores dead.
A lorry had run through a crowd watching fireworks at a seafront in Nice, leaving over 80 people dead and many more people injured. About 10 children were said to be killed in the incident. The incident occurred around 10:30pm on Thursday evening.
The driver of the lorry was shot dead by police, and was identified as a 31-year old French-Tunisian man. According to witnesses, the driver swerved so he could hit as many people as possible, then came down and started shooting to kill more people.
“A horror has come down on France again,” France president Francois Hollande said, adding that “the terrorist character [of the the attack] cannot be denied”. The state of emergency in France, which was due to end on the 26th of July, has now been extended for another 3 months.
“After Paris, Nice is now hit,” Hollande added. “It is all of France which is under threat of Islamic terrorism. “It is clear we need to do all we can to fight against terrorism,” he said. “France is strong, and France will always be stronger, I assure you.”
“Attacks aren’t prepared alone. Attacks are prepared with accomplices,” Nice’s regional president Christian Estrosi said. “There is a chain of complicity. I expect it to be unveiled, discovered and kept up to date.”
