The Gombe State Government has on Saturday commenced the verification of at least 19, 500 civil servants in the pay rolls of the state.
This is just as the Chairman of the committee constituted by the state government, Aliyu Kamara, disclosed that the committee is expected to screen about forty thousand (40,000) civil servants in the eleven (11) Local Government Areas of the State, within a month.
According to Kamara, the exercise is aimed at blocking leakages in the finances of the State Government.
The committee chairman also explained that the state government is expending very huge sums over workers salaries at the expense of people oriented projects that could be initiated and executed by the State Government.
Kamara stated that the exercise which began yesterday is expected to last for a month even as he doubted the possibility of concluding the assignment within the time frame given by Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo due to the large number of the civil servants and the thoroughness of the screening.
Refusing to speak on the findings uncovered so far by the committee, Kamara, however said most of those screened had discrepancies with their dates of births and some other irregularities and assured that government will make public the findings of the committee.
