John Boyega has been chosen to play the lead role to the Pacific Rim sequel starring as the son of Stacker Pentecost, Idris Elba’s character.
Boyega played the role of Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Deadline confirmed Pacific Rim 2 will be directed by award-winning screenwriter/director Steven S. DeKnight who is famous for directing the Spartacus series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Daredevil, while Guillermo del Toro whose previous works include Hellboy, Blade 2, and Crimson Peak will be producing.
del Toro said in a statement: “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
The movie is set to begin production later this year and will be released worldwide by Universal – except in China. Pacific Rim, originally released in 2013, grossed $411 million.
del Toro tweeted, Monday, (June, 6) “Just landed. I am so happy the news broke! Pacific Rim 2 starts shooting soon!”

Boyega got his big break while attending the first black acting drama school owned by Femi Oguns. He began with stage roles in Six Parties and Category B before making his cinematic debut in the 2011 science-fiction comedy Attack the Block where he played the role of a teen gangster named Moses who sought respect in the hood.
In an interview, the 24 year-old talked about how he began acting, “Femi Oguns is my hero. He started Identity drama school, the first black drama school in the UK. There’s now a huge buzz around it, and an army of young talent of all colors, and from the darkest corners, are being found.”
Boyega’s role in Attack the Block got him five awards, including Most Promising Newcomer at The British Independent Film Awards, and Best Actor at the Black Reel Awards.
Boyega said, “I don’t believe in having a plan B or in being realistic. I have determination, and I want to put it out there and work hard.”
The question on everyone’s lips is, will the inclusion of Boyega in Pacific Rim 2 help the movie at the box office? We’ll be watching.
