OAU Shut Down Over Appointment Of New Vice-Chancellor – Prestigious Nigerian university, Obafemi Awolowo University is currently shut down following a series of protests in the school.
Protests had been carried out by the school’s chapter of the Non Academic Staff Union, who were against the appointment of new vice-chancellor Professor Ayobami Salami.
“We have shut down the university indefinitely pending the time that we will resolve issues with our workers – Non-academic Staff of University (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (SSANU),” the school’s registrar, Dotun Awoyemo said.
“We have asked our newly admitted students to go home and postponed the resumption of old students indefinitely.”
The national leadership of NASU are also said to be not pleased by the strike action, and have reportedly disbanded the OAU chapter of the body.
“In accordance with Rule 22 (1 & 5c) of NASU constitution, therefore, the Obafemi Awolowo University Branch Committee is dissolved with effect from 20th June, 2016 for persistent violation of the content of the constitution,” a statement by General Secretary, A. Adeyemi stated.
