Little Aisha Mustapha, a baby born 10 days ago with an open heart is reported dead in the early hours of Tuesday at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri, Borno state.
It would be recalled, video footage of a baby born with her heart outside her chest had surfaced on Facebook last week.
The mother of the infant, Falmata thought she had given birth to twins after she saw the heart of her baby pumping outside her chest.
The Nation gathered that the baby was due to be taken to the University of Enugu Teaching Hospital’s Cardio-Thoracic Center today, for a surgery following the N2.5 million and N3m donations by Yobe State Government and the First Lady Aisha Buhari respectively.
But she passed away in the hospital where she was hospitalised in the early hours of Tuesday.
Breaking the news of the death of the baby, her Uncle, Arama Mustapha said:
“I have just received a call from the mother of the child a few minutes ago that the baby is dead. She called me around 3.06am and broke the news to me. I am really heart broken over the turn of event but my prayers is for Allah to grant her eternal rest.”
Also confirming the news, the Chairman Medical Advisory Council(CMAC) UMTH Dr. Mohammed Bashir said:
“It is very sad that the baby passed away early hours of Tuesday. It’s very sad that she could not make it,”
Dr. Pius Simon, the Consultant Neonatologist, who was managing the baby ahead of her operation, also confirmed the development, describing it as “a sad development”.
Simon revealed that the baby died of infection because the heart has overstayed outside the chest wall for too long.
