Lionel Messi Thinking Of International Retirement, After Copa Final Defeat

It seems Lionel Messi cannot handle another Copa America final loss. As the Barcelona man has revealed he is planning to retire from international football.

The final clash on Sunday, a repeat of last year’s final, which Argentina lost, ended in a goalless draw. And the 29-year-old sent his penalty off the mark. Chile ran out 4-2 winners on penalties.

Argentina lost to Chile in the finals in the 2015 Copa America. They also lost to Germany in the 2014 world cup. And Messi was also in the squad that lost to Brazil in the 2007 final.

“The national team is over for me. That’s four finals (lost), it’s not for me,” Messi told reporters after losing his third final in as many years. “It’s a made decision, I think.”

Lionel Messi has been at odds with officials at the Argentine Football Association. But his own performance in Sunday’s final also seemed to be weighing on him after the contest.

“I feel a great sadness right now that this is happening again,” he said. “I missed my penalty, which was super important. That’s it.”

Argentina’s next matches are in CONMEBOL World Cup qualification with the 2018 World Cup in Russia looming. Gerardo Martino’s men sit third after six matches played.
