The 70th Tony Awards hosted by carpool karaoke champ, James Gordon, recognized the achievement in live Broadway theatre, Sunday, (June, 12) at the Beacon Theatre.

The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre, more commonly known informally as the Tony Award is presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League given for Broadway productions, performances, and regional theatre.

Several discretionary non-competitive awards are also given, including a Special Tony Award, the Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre, and the Isabelle Stevenson Award.

The awards are named after Antoinette “Tony” Perry, co-founder of the American Theatre Wing and saw Hamilton rule the awards with eleven plaques, a first time achievement since the induction of the awards.
