France earned three points from the opening game of Euro 2016, beating Romania 2-1 on a wonderful late goal from Dimitri Payet.
The competition kicked off on Friday when the host, France took on Group A opponents Romania at the Stade de France amid an unprecedented security operation.
A draw had looked likely after Bogdan Stancu’s penalty had cancelled out Olivier Giroud’s header for Les Bleus, following a reckless Patrice Evra challenge.
Antoine Griezmann also hit the post with a header for France, who were indebted to keeper Hugo Lloris for a superb save to deny Stancu early on.
However, with two minutes left Dimitri Payet of West Ham let rip with an unstoppable rocket into the top corner to deny Romania a draw, and put tournament hosts and favourites France on course for a 2-1 victory to start the tournament.
The home crowd dissolved into delirium when Payet was substituted shortly afterwards.
