The pressure of possible elimination from the EURO 2016 appears to have gotten to Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo.
While taking a walk with the team, the Real Madrid star was approached by a reporter, who was eager to know if the team was ready for today’s clash with Hungary. Ronaldo didn’t respond, but simply grabbed the microphone from the reporter and threw it into a nearby lake.
It’s not be a fairytale tournament for Ronaldo so far, having failed to score in any of the two opening games, with Portugal also yet to record a win. Ronaldo had been frustrated in the group’s opening match against Iceland, and missed a penalty kick that could have given them a win in the second match against Austria.
“The day after the first game you said Cristiano was all smiles,” Portugal head coach Fernando Santos said on Ronaldo’s mentality. “After the first match your stories were that Cristiano was all smiles and now it is that he’s not smiling. I am sure he will get over everything and do what he does best. He’s always proved that what he does best is score and I’m sure he will do everything to be anxiety free to score.
“He will carry on taking free-kicks and penalties. We have someone who is the standard-bearer for our country, and we do love him. The Portuguese love Cristiano.”
