Another nightmare final for Messi and Argentina, as Chile successfully defended their Copa America title.
The Chileans made it back-to-back Copa America titles, after beating the Albiceleste 4-2 on penalties, in a fiery match.
Both teams were reduced to ten men in the first half, as Marcos Rojo and Marcelo Diaz were sent off. And neither team could find the net after 120 minutes at the MetLife Stadium.
And for the second year running at the Copa America, penalties were needed to decide the winner. With Chile coming out on top, to deny Argentina their first major trophy in 23 years.
After captain and goalkeeper Claudio Bravo denied Sergio Aguero with a stunning finger-tip save in extra time, he was at it again in the shootout. He saved Lucas Biglia’s effort following Lionel Messi’s skied shot over the bar as Francisco Silva stepped up and converted the winning penalty.
The 4-2 shoot-out loss marked a third consecutive defeat in a final for Argentina, beaten last year as well as the 2014 World Cup.
