A new militant group called the Niger Delta Avengers, which is responsible for the recent attacks on pipelines within that region, has destroyed the main pipeline supplying gas that provides electricity to the Escravos tank farm in Delta state owned by Chevron.
The group, which gave an ultimatum to oil firms to leave the Delta before the end of May, took responsibility of the recent bombing at the early hours of Thursday via a tweet on its Twitter handle.
Speaking to Reuters on the incident, a company source said “It is a crude line which means all activities in Chevron are grounded.”
Zebo Austin also added that “We heard a loud blast at the Abiteye to Escravos crude pipeline which was blown up last night by yet-to-be identified militant group.”
The Avengers said the latest action was carried out after Chevron ignored its May 12 warning not to fix a major crude pipeline blown up by the group early in the month.
The Avengers, it was learnt, seek for a greater share of oil profits, an end to pollution and independence for the region.
