Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague thinks Jose Mourinho may decide to keep Juan Mata at Old Trafford this summer if the Portuguese takes over at Man Utd.
“Football is interesting,” he told Sky Sports. “Xabi Alonso plays for Pep Guardiola now. Alonso when he was at Real three or four years ago was a completely different player. Mourinho asked him to be more aggressive at Real. Now he plays in a different way.
“Sometimes enemies find a way to work together. I think this could be the same with Mata. It was quite clear Mata wasn’t needed at Chelsea. He wasn’t the kind of offensive midfielder Mourinho wanted. He didn’t put enough work in or he didn’t run enough, he didn’t recover the ball enough and didn’t do enough with it.
“Perhaps now he is needed. This United side needs a complete recycle. Why would you get rid of one of the best, most consistent players they have? We may see a completely different reaction from Jose to Mata than what we saw at Chelsea.”
