Mousa Dembele will miss six matches after he was handed a six-match ban by the Football Association (FA) for eye-gouging Chelsea’s Diego Costa on Monday.
The Belgium international appeared to gouge the Spain striker in the eye, an action missed by officials in a violent encounter between Chelsea and Tottenham.
The match ended in a 2-2 draw and jettisoned Tottenham’s hopes of winning the EPL.
Dembele accepted the charge, but disagreed with the governing body’s view, that his actions were worthy of a longer suspension than the required three-match ban.
A stance upheld by the Independent Regulatory Commission, with the FA making its ruling.
Dembele will now miss the final two games of this season against Southampton and Newcastle United and the first four matches of the new campaign.
It had been reported that Spurs would seek to challenge any ban longer than three games, although boss Mauricio Pochettino did concede his players had “maybe crossed the line” against Chelsea in a press conference on Friday.
