PDP Crisis: Makarfi-led Faction Bows, Recognises Sheriff As National Chairman

There are emerging discrepancies in the injunctions of two courts as regards to the position of the caretaker committee constituted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at their convention held on Saturday May 21, 2016.

The Punch Newspaper gathered that the Lagos State Division of the Federal High Court declared as null and void the caretaker committee constituted to take over the affairs of the PDP from its acting National Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff.

Confirming the stance of the court, the judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, in a ruling on Monday, directed the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, to arrest anybody who parades ‘himself or herself’ as the  acting chairman of the party pending the determination of a suit before it.

Buba had ruled in a suit FHC/L/CS/613/2016, filed by the acting national chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff; the national secretary, Professor Adewale Oladipo; and national auditor, Fatai Adeyanju, praying the court to abort the convention, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

In a related development, the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt granted an interim injunction restraining Sheriff and Oladipo, who were recently removed from office, from parading themselves as the Principals of the Party, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice brought before it by the PDP.

The presiding judge, Justice A. M. Liman, granted a restraining order on any member of the party, who was removed from office, from receiving nominations and or submitting names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice brought by the Party.

Vanguard Newspaper, however, said that the court ordered the INEC to recognise the just elected National Caretaker Committee of the PDP, Sen. Ahmed Markarfi, in all matters pertaining the party, pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice.

In contradiction, Premium Times stated that Justice Buba of Lagos High Court on Tuesday, ordered Sheriff to continue serving as the party’s chairman, as he nullified that of Makarfi.
