Antoine Griezmann has revealed his legendary compatriot Zinedine Zidane could not persuade to join Real Madrid as he entered fresh contract talks with Atletico.
The France international has emerged as one of Europe’s most-coveted strikers, hitting 32 goals in a scintillating campaign for Los Colchoneros.
Griezmann has been linked with a move away from the Vicente Calderon, with cross-city rivals Real Madrid – managed by France 1998 World Cup hero Zidane – reported suitors.
But Griezmann’s admiration for the Madrid coach would not lead to him swapping loyalties and he has revealed he hopes to extend his stay with Atleti.
“If Zidane calls me [and asks me to join Real] I will say that I’m at Atletico,” he told Canal Plus. “Zidane is a great person, but I’m here.
“I’m even talking to renew my contract. I hope [the talks] will succeed.”
