Real Madrid were expected to dominate the match, and hit the ground firing, with Cristiano Ronaldo having a goal waived off inside the first 3 minutes. Los Blancos continued to press on, with Wolfsburg seemingly content with sitting deep and soaking the pressure.

The visitors were wasteful with most of their chances, and soon Wolfsburg began to break with some regularity. On one of such breaks, the ball found its way to Andre Schurrle inside the Real Madrid box, who drew a foul from Casemiro. Ricardo Rodriguez converted the ensuing penalty, and shortly after Arnold put the home side two goals up with a good finish inside the box.

Real Madrid’s plight was not helped by their defensive line, with Marcelo and Danilo consistently getting caught out of position and Pepe having a terrible night.
