The authorities of the University of Ibadan (UI) have decided to shut down the varsity indefinitely and then ordered the students to vacate the campus with immediate effect on Tuesday evening.

The indefinite closure is coming on the heels of the protest embarked on by the students of the institution under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) over what they described as the unjust rustication” of a 500 level student of Petroleum Engineering, Tunji Ekpeti Michael.

The management had through its radio station, Diamond FM, mandated all students to be present for lectures today, April 26.

The school’s Director of Public Communications, Olatunji Oladejo, said: “Michael broke the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the university. He was found guilty and was queried for leading a protest at the Independence Hall for lack of water and electricity.

“The Student Affairs queried him and he appeared before a panel. He had 21 days to appeal against the order and explain himself but did not appeal. Rather than appeal, he began to disrupt school activities. This behaviour is not acceptable in a civilised society.

“He was rusticated for a semester as recommended by the Central Disciplinary Committee (CDC) for the gravity of the offence.”

However, in a circular issued by the Registrar of the school, Dr O.I. Olukoya, on Tuesday evening, the management ordered that students vacate the campus immediately as the varsity had to be shut down to prevent lost of lives and properties.

The circular titled “Disturbance of peace and threat to lives and property on campus by some students of the University of Ibadan and other students” ask students to comply with the directive till further notice.
