It is appalling when people fail to identify their forte, thereby dabbling with jobs they can hardly do. This is the case in Dark, a movie written, produced and directed by Rukky Sanda, in which she also plays the lead female whilst featuring renowned actors like Monalisa Chinda and Van Vicker in key roles.
Tracy (Rukky Sanda) becomes bitter, following the death of her daughter and metes out her frustration on the world around her.
The movie is dull and uninteresting due to the fact that very little critical thinking went into the development of the screenplay. There is no school in the league of the Lekki City International College that will allow a small child to be out of the school gate alone. The question is: Was he sent away each day after school or did he choose to be there? Even if he chooses to be there, the school authorities will not allow that. A member of staff, the watchman inclusive, must have seen him and taken appropriate action before that fateful day. More importantly, it beats anyone’s imagination how a young boy who is less than seven is enrolled in a college!
The security man says it was Delphine (Monalisa Chinda) that picked her son; really? Do Chinda and Sanda share any form of resemblance or was that the watchman’s first day at work? How won’t he remark a parent notorious for being the last person to pick her son on a daily basis? Tracy’s body language glaringly shows she knows about Carl’s disappearance, so there was no suspense in the story contrary to the belief of the producers that the viewers are in for some surprise. Else, how can someone ask what the problem is when that person is supposed to be in the dark, regarding a certain development?

Delphine’s discussion with Tracy, where the latter reassures her that all will be well, is affected and the whole film is actually marred by drab dialogue. Delphine’s instant familiarity with Tracy is unnatural and unbelievable; in fact, the film plays out as if Delphine did not have any friend or confident prior to meeting Tracy, how possible?
The 82-minute films is built on an unreasonable premise because if the demands of one’s job makes it impossible to do school run, there is nothing wrong in seeking appropriate support. The same goes for the subplot of a woman who becomes paranoid and embittered, following her daughter’s death. The inter-relationships fail to gel, no thanks to a watery story/screenplay. However, if more attention had been paid to the development of the story, the producers may have ended up with the fabulous account of a woman who became mentally unstable after the death of her only child, leading her into serial murder.
The portrayal of the security man as a fence-climbing retard is infuriating because the fact that people are poorly educated or even illiterate does not necessarily tamper with their commonsense. Does the security man not know that missing persons are reported to the police for investigation? Worse still, he consents to wine and dine in the same house, unafraid that what happened to Akpan could befall him as well. So, after Tracy narrates the unduly long and implausible story of her experience with Akpan, the viewer is meant to believe that Akpan’s friend/colleague buys the story?
So, Delphine and her husband, Kayode Philips (Van Vicker) know no else save for Tracy! Why, indeed, is Tracy the only one in their world? If this was an attempt to tell a story with a few characters, then it rendered the film unwatchable!

There are innumerable errors in Dark, which make it a half-baked flick. The inspector’s skills are poor; he does not even know how to monitor a suspect without drawing attention to himself and raising suspicion. How can Tracy’s story be told from Delphine’s point-of view?
In film, the suspension of disbelief comes with the application of sound logic by film-makers, an element that is conspicuously lacking in Dark. If there is anything that Sanda can do, screenwriting is definitely not one of them.
The time advertised in the Silverbird Movie Brochure is 1 hour 35 minutes when the film’s actual duration is 1hour 22 minutes. Some other cinema houses are also guilty of this misleading timing for films, which happens for several movies; where the indicated time on the more schedule in print and online alike is usually longer than the film’s exact duration. These cinema houses should always disclose the correct duration of films
