Following preparations for the Ife-Central House of Assembly bye-election, in Osun state on Saturday, April 9, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured the members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who will be involved in the conduct of maximum security.
The assurance was given by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Alhaji Nasiru Ayilara at a press briefing in Osogbo on Thursday, while speaking on the readiness of the electoral body for the poll.
The assurance is coming against the backdrop of persistent attacks and killings of corps members during election duties.
Barely 3 weeks ago, a corps member, Samuel Dumebi Okonta, was murdered in cold blood by unknown gunmen in Rivers State, while some were abducted during the federal and state legislature re-run polls in the state.
According to Ayilara, due to the political nature of the council, movement would be restricted from 8am to 4pm only in the areas where the election would be held.
” We have met with all the security agencies in the state and they have assured the commission of safety of both electoral officials and the voters.”
“Corps members and other electoral officials will be protected. We don’t want any of our youths to die and we also don’t want anybody, who will be involved in the conduct of the election, to die,” he said.
The Ife-Central House of Assembly State Constituency seat became vacant following the death of Hon.Oladejo Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who died on December, 27, 2015.
