Man hijacks Egypt Air flight to talk to his wife – An Egypt Air airliner was hijacked today by a man who wanted it to divert to Cyprus so he could speak to his estranged wife.
The passenger had taken over Flight MS181, which was headed for Cairo, after he revealed he was wearing an explosive belt.
His wife is already reportedly on her way to the airport, and Cypriot president Nicos Anastasiades has allayed fears that the attack was a terrorist one.
“We are doing our upmost in order for everyone to be released and safe,” he said, adding “Always there is a woman involved.”
The lone hijacker is said to have released all on board except the crew and four foreign passengers. According to Egypt Air, there were 81 passengers aboard the flight.
“The pilot said that a passenger told him he had an explosives vest and forced the plane to land in Larnaca,” the Egyptian civil aviation ministry said in a statement.
