Chad have withdrawn from the AFCON 2017 qualifiers, dealing Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the competition a huge blow.
It is believed financial constraints is the reason for Chad’s withdrawal, as they sit bottom of the group with zero points from three matches.
In accordance with qualifying rules, all points garnered from matches involving Chad will be annulled, with Nigeria sitting two points behind Egypt with two matches to go.
Nigeria, who failed to reach the 2015 tournament having lifted the trophy in 2013, had been in the running to qualify as one of two best runners-up, but the CAF has confirmed that only the top-placed team will now be eligible to qualify from Group G.
Chad have been fined $20,000 for pulling the plug on their campaign.
