The Amsterdam Arena, which is him to Ajax could be renamed the Johan Cruyff Arena according to the mayor of the Dutch capital.

Cruyff died at 68 after losing the battle to lung cancer, with social media suggesting the Ajax legend be honoured.

The club cannot make such decision themselves, but have the support of the local authority, who co-owns the stadium.

“I have discussed this with mayor Eberhard van der Laan and we came to the conclusion that it is something we should try to make happen,” Van den Burg told RTL.

“I think we have the support of 837,000 people from Amsterdam.

“We have some great arguments to convince the other shareholders.”
