According to the Daily Star, Arsenal’s plans to sign Mohamed Elneny from Basel hang by a thread over questions about his work permit.
Recent reports over last week have suggested the Egyptian midfielder is ready to complete a £7m deal after completing a medical, however, the move could now be delayed due to work permit problems.
The Daily Star explains that Egypt are 57th in FIFA’s world rankings which means Elneny does not automatically qualify for a work permit with the FA’s criteria limited to the top 50 countries.
Mohamed Elneny came through the youth ranks at Al-Ahly before moving to Egyptian Premier League rivals El Mokawloon, where he broke into the first team. He then moved to Basel in January 2013
He initially signed for Basel on loan but made the move permanent in May 2013. The midfielder has become a key player since then, making close to 100 Swiss Super League appearances and helping Basel win three consecutive titles.
