Matt Damon on #OscarsSoWhite – Actor Matt Damon has joined the #OscarsSoWhite movement, admitting that there are “massive issues” in Hollywood.
Damon, who is nominated for Best Lead Actor for his role in The Martian, revealed that diversity in Hollywood had a “long, long, long way to go.”
“We’re talking about huge systemic injustices around race and gender that are a lot bigger than the Oscars,” he said to the Associated Press at the Sundance Film Festival. “They’re massive issues in our industry and in our country.”
Some black actors, including Will Smith and Spike Lee have already revealed they’d be boycotting the show, while actress Viola Davis told show host Chris Rock to use the opportunity to make a statement.
“Like I said, the Oscars are not really the issue,” Davis said to Entertainment Tonight. “It’s a symptom of a much greater disease. But if he does, I hope he takes it as an opportunity to make a statement, a social statement about change. It’s 2016.”
