Barbie Goes Diverse: The Famous Doll Gets A Curvier Body

share on:

The enduring doll, Barbie, who arrived in 1959 has been ushered into a new era.

With questionable body figure and unattainable definition of what beauty is, Barbie self-defined the word, without even saying a word. Now she’s blazing the same path by adding four new body types to her collection tagged ”The 2016 Barbie Fashionistas Collection #TheDollEvolves”.

Introducing the 2016 Barbie® Fashionistas™ Dolls. Releasing over time throughout the year, the line includes 4 body types, 7 skin tones, 22 eye colors, 24 hairstyles, and countless on-trend fashions and accessories.babiee-tileEvolving #OscarSoWhite? maybe.

The project which was code named, Project Dawn is a huge risk for Mattel, Barbie Shop.

Not with the old version being white and skinny, the adding of diversity in color and body shape is torn between boosting their revenue or taking them at a loss. Plus now is a risky time in the americas regarding diversity.

In an exclusive interview with Time, Barbie says, Now Can We Stop Talking About My Body. The comment was a joke:

THEY’LL ALL BE CALLED BARBIE, BUT IT’S THE CURVY ONE—WITH MEAT ON HER THIGHS AND A PROTRUDING TUMMY AND BEHIND—THAT MARKS THE MOST STARTLING CHANGE TO THE MOST INFAMOUS BODY IN THE WORLD.

Mattel talks about how risky the present venture is because Barbie is more than just a doll. She’s also a brand who closes in on $1 billion in sales across more than 150 countries annually, and 92% of American girls ages 3 to 12 have owned a Barbie, thanks in part to her affordable $10 price tag.

With the addition of the new skin tones, diverse body types and hair textures, the company hopes the new dolls will be a reflection of the young owner’s world.

She’s been the global symbol of a certain kind of American beauty for generations, with brand recognition that’s up there with Mickey Mouse. M.G. Lord, a Barbie biographer, once said she was designed “to teach women what—for better or worse—is expected of them in society.”

If you’ve ever owned a barbie, you’d know having two with different body types is amazing. Lots of clothes to swap, hair to take off and on, swapping heads like black body on white head and vice versa. Slim clothes on curvy and curvy clothes on slim barbie. Lots of young girls will reenact these preceding fits of fights, tears, and barbie-drama.

The company is setting up a separate help line just to deal with Project Dawn complaints.
