Akon and Shell Partner To Create Human/Solar Powered Football Fields

Akon has expanded his free electricity to Africa project to include powering football fields with energy generated from humans and the sun.

The first of these was built in the Federal College of Education Lagos, Nigeria in partnership with oil and gas giants Shell. The lighting consists of six powerful and low consuming LED floodlights based on an invention by a young British engineer Laurence Kemball-Cook.

As players run on the field, electronic tiles underneath the artificial turf, convert the movement of the players into power by kinetic energy, while energy from the sun is also stored as electrical energy.
