Naira Appreciates Against The Dollar At Parallel Market

The Naira on Friday, December 18, appreciated against the Dollar at the parallel after weeks of free fall against the greenback.

The currency gained N10 to exchange at N270 to the dollar after it nosedived to N280 on Thursday.

At the official interbank window, it gained N0.03 to close at N196.97 to the dollar.

Traders said currency speculators were afraid that the Naira could sell below their expectations and this forced them to release foreign exchange for sale.

Also Nigerians living abroad would be coming home with a lot of foreign currencies during the Yuletide period which will also help reduce the pressure on the foreign exchange market and strengthen the Naira.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has on Wednesday, December 16, stated that it has started mobilising all its relevant organs against plans by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to revert the pump price of petrol to N97 from next year.

The NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, who gave the workers’ position at a symposium to mark the 10th anniversary of Comrade Chuma Ubani’s death, said if Buhari wants to succeed in his programmes, he must be wary of the likes of Kachikwu.

CAN Reacts To Moves By Buhari To List Nigeria Among Arab Nations To Fight ISIS

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has on Wednesday, December 16, protested the attempt by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to subtly enlist Nigeria among Arab nations to fight ISIS, Vanguard reports.

According to a statement issued by the General Secretary of CAN, Rev. Musa Asake, CAN said: “This singular gesture of the Buhari government betrays so much, and tends to confirm our fears that underneath everything this government is doing, there is an agenda with strong Islamic undertones, aimed at undermining Nigeria’s pluralistic character and neutrality regarding government’s affiliation to any one religion.

“While joining hands with other countries to fight ISIS is something good, our country must not be tagged as a Muslim or Arab nation.

Christians must make a public statement showing their discontent on this development which portends great danger to national unity and integration.”
