Star Wars: The Force Awakens makes biggest debut
Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, finally opened in cinemas after much anticipation, and it recorded the biggest opening weekend in history.
The movie, the latest installment in the iconic Star Wars franchise, grossed $238 million in its opening weekend in North America, good enough to break the previous record of $208.8 million belonging to Jurassic World.
It grossed $517 million worldwide, second to only Jurassic World’s $524.9 million, despite the fact that it hasn’t been released in the huge Chinese market.
“Our sole focus has been creating a film that delivers that one-of-a-kind Star Wars experience, and director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and the Lucasfilm team have outdone themselves,” Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said in a statement.
