Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud were on target for Arsenal as Yaya Toure’s wonder goal proved to only be a consolation as Arsenal picked up a 2-1 win to keep themselves firmly in the hunt for the premier league title.
Both teams began the match cautiously and clear cut chances were few and far between as a battle for midfield supremacy ensued between Ramsey and Yaya Toure in the opening minutes of the game with neither giving a quarter. Arsenal finally took the lead in the 33rd minute after some beautiful build up play allowed Ozil to set up Walcott who maneuvered himself into space on the outside of the box and curled the ball past Joe Hart to make it 1-0. The goal seemed to give Arsenal a breath of confidence as the London team controlled the game and in injury time of the first half, Giroud slotted in between the legs of Joe Hart after being put through by Ozil to make it 2-0. Pellegrini introduced Sterling in the second half for Fabian Delph and while Manchester City controlled possession, they never really had penetration. Arsenal however did and created two glorious chances on the break. Those chances were spurned by Joel Campbell. In the 82nd minute, Yaya Toure produced a moment of magic from a seemingly harmless move as the ball was played to him at an awkward angle outside the box. The Ivorian midfielder went on to curl the ball into the top corner of the net past a hapless Petr Cech. Manchester City prodded and searched for an equalizer but Arsenal held on to earn an important win in the title race.
Arsenal would go into Christmas second in the league and two points behind Leicester City. The importance of this result however is that Arsenal fans get that feeling that their side can go all the way in the league this season
