New Ooni arrives Ile-Ife
The new Ooni of Ile-Ife, Prince Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi has arrived the ancient city to begin his coronation rites.
Ogunwusi was met by chiefs at the Ife toll gate as he arrived the town.
There was plenty of fanfare and excitement as the new Ooni arrived the town, with the streets lined with citizens who had come to catch a first glimpse of their new king.
He then proceeded to the Giesi Ruling House, where he will be initiated into the cult of the Sooko.
After his initiation, the process require that he perform another sets of rites at the Orunto River inside the palace.
The rites are quite lengthy, and reportedly:
“The Ooni will also go into seclusion in Ilofi for a minimum of 21 days for series of rites and initiations. Though the rites could last 30 days in some circumstances but 21 days may be sufficient. And finally, he would meet an old woman in spirit to receive the power left by Oduduwa. The old woman will give him all the power over the Yoruba race. Then after all these, he will be installed as the Ooni.”
