President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Professor Mahmud Yakubu as new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The confirmation was made known by the Council of States at its emergency meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday, October 21, 2015.
It was the first meeting of the Council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Following the appointment, Acting chairman of the Commission, Amina zakari, will now be the INEC Commissioner representing the North-West.
Before his new appointment, Mr. Yakubu, a professor of history and international studies, was the executive secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
He hails from Bauchi state and is a professor of political history and international studies
He is an expert in guerrilla warfare, terrorism and counter-terrorism.
He was part of the team at last year’s national conference.
Meanwhile, Nigerians have started making their opinion known on the new development.
