Kenya’s boss-lady Muthoni Drummer Queen teams up with rapper Khaligraph Jones (Kenya) and Nigeria’s MI to deliver her new single titled ‘TURN ON THE LIGHTS’. Produced by Swiss Production duo Jean ‘Hook’ Guisbuller and Greg ‘GR’ Escoffey, the heavy hitting track alternates between energetic, bouncy trap supported by a non-relenting bass line and a spaced out drum heavy chorus which allows the rappers to deliver their witty, double-entendre punch lines with razor sharp precision and unmitigated flow.
”TURN ON THE LIGHTS” signals a return to delivery, with TECHNIQUE being the key distinguishing characteristic of the song. MDQ’s verse is delivered in sheng (Swahili slang) and proves yet again her poetic depth and fearless attitude as she mocks her imitators while running laps around other rappers.
Khaligraph delivers in his characteristic double time flow, while MI’s verse is filled with metaphors and witty commentary.
The chorus comprises of a catchy Swahili phrase; “sisi tunang’aa saa hii” which literally means “we are shinning bright right now“; an apt description of the unique position each MC occupies as an African artist with global impact and appeal. The artistic direction of the video is an A-typical hiphop montage full of colour and text developed by Roy Ncheeri of PhocusPhoto and Bazil Ngode, with assistance and input from Hook!
“TURN ON THE LIGHTS” is available for sale on the Muthoni Drummer Queen Facebook page as well as on Superngoma.
