Wawrinka was almost as quick in dispatching off South Africa’s Kevin Anderson,  6-4 6-4 6-0.

“Stan didn’t make it easy,” admitted Anderson after the game.

“He was taking time away from me. He was swinging out and I was just a step slow.”

The winner of the Federer – Wawrinka tie will face the winner of the other semi-final between Marin Cilic and Novak Djokovic for the 2015 US Open title.

Federer has won 16 of his previous meetings with Wawrinka, though his lesser known compatriot won their last meeting at this year’s French Open.

“Stan played a wonderful match against me in Paris,” he said.

“I couldn’t be happier to play him here. It is cool for us to have two Swiss in the semi-finals.”
