Nadal Suffers Shock Defeat At The US Open

Rafeal Nadal blew a two set lead in the 3rd round of the US Open in a game against 32nd seeded Italian, Fabio Fognini who put in an impressive performance both in skill and spirit to come back 3-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4.

Nadal began the game obviously with a point to prove as he was fast, making few errors and even breaking Fognini and taking the first set 6-3. But early in the second set, Nadal started to lose momentum as he started showing early signs of fatigue and Fogini took advantage even though Nadal struggled to win the set 6-4. Fognini came back very strong in the third set, making Nadal run around the court, and he easily took the set 6-4. In the fourth set, Nadal made a lot of unforced errors, got broken and lost the set 6-3. Nadal fought hard in the fifth set but the Spaniard could not keep it together and the fatigue caught up to him big time and Fognini beat him 6-4 after breaking his serve.

Following his injuries late last year, and early this year, Rafael Nadal has not looked like his old self. Nadal has looked a step slower, weaker and all round poorer than the Nadal who took out Puerta and Federer in 2005 at 18 to win the French Open.
