The banner was displayed during the club’s 0-0 draw with Lille on Saturday.

“The club condemns, as it always has, any discriminatory demonstration and especially this particularly abhorrent message,” the statement published on Lyon’s official website read.

“This message was immediately removed by security staff to the extent that almost nobody saw it in the stadium and it was not reported on by the media.

“The club wanted to file a complaint but the police refused to register one on the grounds that no offence would have been committed.

“The club denounces the behaviour of a handful of individuals whose sole aim is to exploit the media coverage of football and Lyon in this case to try to give weight to a message that fortunately only an extreme minority share.”

The club went further to add that they were joining an European club initiative to help the refugees.
