Hajj death count rises to 199

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has revealed 15 states in Nigeria that lost some of their pilgrims in last Thursday deadly stampede in Saudi Arabia during the hajj.

In a news briefing in Saudi Arabia on Monday, the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission, Alhaji Abdullahi Mukhtar, said, 54 Nigerians have so far been confirmed dead spreading across the states listed below.

Borno
Jigawa
Cross Rivers
Kano
Katsina
Kebbi
Nassarawa
Niger
Ogun
Ondo
Sokoto
Yobe
Taraba
Zamfara

He continued that 42 of the 56 that died were from state pilgrims welfare boards including two NAHCON officials, while 16 were among those that came for the hajj through private tour operators.

Mukhtar said the search still continues and investigations still ongoing as some pilgrims are still missing.
