Arsenal have become the first English club to make gestures in order to assist refugees who are fleeing Syria in numbers every day.
A lot of clubs have already made donations and contributions to refugee relief causes but no English club had made any (public) commitment until Arsenal. Arsene Wenger announced that Arsenal would be donating 1 pound for every ticket sold in their premier league clash against Stoke City this weekend. ‘For the game against Stoke, for every ticket sold, £1 will be donated to victims of the Syrian crisis,’ he told the media. The Frenchman then told the Arsenal official website: ‘It’s an exceptional circumstance and I’m very happy that our club contributes to help refugees to settle in countries where they come without anything. Arsene Wenger went on to laud Arsenal for always wanting to give back.
UEFA are hoping to raise over 2 million Euros in the opening matchday of the UEFA champions league and UEFA Europa league competitions as all the 80 teams in both tournaments have pledged to donate 1 euro each from their ticket sales to aid the refugees from Syria.
Arsenal may not be atop the premier league table but they have definitely set the pace for humanitarian activities in England
