In what was a dose of debut Magic, new signing, Anthony Martial showed fans and doubters alike what he was about as he came off the bench to seal a memorable 3-1 win for Manchester United over traditional rivals, Liverpool.
Manchester United and Liverpool both came into the game needing a win following losses in the previous matchday but neither team really looked to get on the front foot. Manchester United controlled the ball in the first half and had more possession but there was no penetration whatsoever by Van Gaal’s side and the first half ended in a boring goalless stalemate. Ashley Young came on for Memphis Depay at half time and made an instant impact, winning a freekick on the edge of the box. Mata worked a clever free kick onto the edge of the box and Blind fired a shot into the net in the 49th minute to make it 1-0 to Manchester United. Liverpool immediately put Manchester united on the back foot but in the 70th minute when Gomez brought Ander Herrera down in the box, the Spaniard stepped up in the absence of Rooney and made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-0 to Manchester United. What followed next was brilliant. After minutes of mounting pressure, Jordan Ibe’s cross was deflected slightly behind Christian Benteke in the 84th minute and the Belgian turned around and struck a wonderful overhead kick into the corner of the net to make it 2-1.
Two minutes later, Anthony Martial won the hearts of every Manchester United fan in the world. He had only been on the pitch for about six minutes when he received the ball just outside the box, turned Skrtel inside out before finishing low into the corner to win the game for Manchester United.
Van Gaal would feel justified now for spending the huge sum of 36 million euros on the 19 year old Frenchman as Manchester United moved back into 2nd place on the league table.
