Following the Purchase of Anthony Martial by Manchester United, the former Monaco man became one of the most expensive footballers in the world and one of the most expensive teenagers in the world of football. Martial’s price has been questioned by the media and football experts alike but he is not the only teenager to command a hefty price and now we count down the most expensive teenagers purchased by clubs from the Rooneys of this world to the Lucas Mouras.

 

  1. Mikel Obi (19): £16 million to Chelsea from Manchester United/Lyn Oslo (2005)

At 19 Mikel Obi moved to Manchester United for 4 million pounds but following a huge transfer sga which involved the player claiming he was forced to sign for Manchester United and the players agent paying of the his parents, Chelsea eventually paid 12 million pounds for Mikel Obi and a further 4 million pounds to Lyn Oslo taking his total price to 16 million pounds.

 

  1. Sergio Ramos (19) £22 million to Real Madrid from Sevilla (2005)

At just 19 Sergio Ramos broke through the ranks at Sevilla and in the La Liga to become the most sought after defender in Europe, much like Varane was last season. Not wanting to miss out on a bargain and having the financial power, Real Madrid coughed up 22 million pounds to Sevilla for his signature and 10 years later, they can say it is money well spent

He was 19 in 2001 and was pacey, strong and skillful, he reminded people of Paolo Rossi with his quickness and eye for goal. AS Roma decided thet Cassano and Totti were going to be the flag bearers for their team, paying a huge 24 million pounds to Bari for his services. In hindsight,only Bari would be happy with that deal as injuries and indiscipline ensured that Cassano never rose to the heights predicted and AS Roma moved hi on for 5 million Pounds.

 

  1. Marquinhos (19) £25 million to PSG from Roma (2013)

at just 19 Marquinhos was playing like a 29 year old defender and with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich looming, PSG went to Roma with an offer they couldn’t resist, snapping the Brazilian center/full back up for 25 million a fee which is more and more seeming like a bargain as the player has developed immensely in the last two seasons

 

  1. Anderson (18) £25 million to Manchester United from Porto (2007)

At 18, Anderson was already called a future Brazilian captain. Powerful, fast, agile, hardworking and a decent passer, Sir Alex Ferguson decided to pay up and he did, handing Porto 25 million pounds for his signature. Injuries and laziness hidered him from fulfilling his potential and Manchester United finally released him at the start of the season on a free transfer

When he became one of the most expensive teenagers in the world, many expected big things form 19 year old Argentine speedster, Saviola who reminded everyone of Michael Owen. Saviola never lived up to the 29 million pounds that Barcelona paid for him and finally moved on from the club to a host of other clubs even though he had a few decent spell in and around Europe, he never really became great

 

  1. Wayne Rooney (18) £30 million to Manchester United from Everton (2004)

At 16 Rooney burst on the scene scoring against Arsenal for Everton and two years later, he would become the most expensive teenager in the world moving to the biggest club in the world, Manchester United for 30 million pounds after Ferguson had failed to land him twice. Rooney would go on to become a Manchester United legend, win trophies and captain the team, among the expensive teenagers, this is one that really developed and became money well spent.

 

  1. Lucas Moura (19) £31 million to PSG from Sao Paulo (2012)

Manchester United failed to pay enough and PSG moved in and paid 31 million pounds for Lucas Moura to make him the most expensive teenager in world football in 2012 and he went on to join the likes of Thiago Motta and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a star studded side. Still not yet the finished article, Moura still has time as he is yet to show the reason why PSG spent so much money on him.

 

  1. Luke Shaw (18) £35 million to Manchester United from Southampton (2014)

Manchester United chased Shaw for a whole season before making him the most expensive teenager in the world and making him the highest paid teenager in the world in one move at just 18 years old. Shaw is far from his peak but has shown some good signs this season for Manchester United

Manchester United broke their record for buying expensive teenagers in consecutive seasons in one of the biggest panic buys ever; bringing in 19 year old Anthony Martial for 38 million pounds on the transfer deadline day. Martial’s style of play is reminiscent of Thierry Henry but the former Monaco has some learning to do and where better to do it than Manchester United?

 

Manchester United have spent the most on these expensive teenagers but not all of them have panned out.
