Valencia Edge Into Champions League Despite 2-1 Loss To Monaco

Elderson Echiejile was on target for Monaco as they failed to overturn a 3-1 loss at the Mestalla and were dumped out of the UEFA champions league.

Monaco who famously knocked Arsenal out of last season’s tournament at the last sixteen stage started today’s match on the back foot as Fabinho passed the ball directly to the feet of Alvaro Negredo who then chipped the goalkeeper to give his side the lead and a 4-1 aggregate lead. Monaco rebounded strongly from the set back and pushed forward in search of a lifeline and Raggi handed them that lifeline in the 17th minute, firing into the bottom corner after Ryan failed to deal with what seemed like a poor cross. Monaco were very much the attacking force in the second half and Valencia showed of their organization in defense until the 75th minute when Ryan again failed to claim a corner and the ball fell to Elderson Echiejile who fired the ball home with very fierce shot. Monaco literally had everyone in the Valencia half for the closing five minutes of the game but Ryan did not make another inexplicable error and Valencia survived the onslaught.

Valencia would now join Sevilla, Real Madrid and Barcelona as the representatives of Spain in the UEFA Champions League group stage this season
