Steenkamp parents allege Pistorius guilt
The parents of the late Reeva Steenkamp are fully convinced that her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius, murdered her intentionally.
In a TV interview, Barry & June Steenkamp revealed that they were not ready to speak to Pistorius, and that his act had ruined their lives.
Pistorius has been sentenced for culpable homicide, and was eligible for home arrest after 10 months, which was last week.
South Africa’s Justice minister Michael Masutha surprisingly suspended the move, with prosecutors still hoping to get a murder conviction.
“How can 10 months be enough? He killed her. He admits he killed her. She’s dead. Why didn’t he just let her walk away? Why?” her mother June Steenkamp said in an interview with Australia’s Channel Seven.
“Only Oscar will know for the rest of his life what really happened and would you like to live with it? Would I? Never, ever.”
“We will leave it to the justice system,” Reeva’s father Barry Steenkamp told the broadcaster. “It’s not finished, not finished by a long way.
“If the outcome is there’s going to be a longer sentence, are we going to feel better? I don’t know.”
Pistorius had claimed that he had shot Steenkamp four times through a door after he thought she was an intruder, but Barry believes he killed her in rage.
“He got angry, she went off to the toilet, locked herself inside, and then … him pulling out the gun and shooting,” he said.
“When he realised that had happened, then he couldn’t stop and he had to carry on until it was finished.”
On what she would say to the Paralympic star when she was ready, June said: “I would say, ‘All I want you to realise is that you have ruined our lives. You have taken her life, her possible marriage or having a baby. Our grandchild. And you have ruined our lives.’ I just want to say that.”
