The offside rule has been modified just in time for the start of the 2015/16 Premier League season.
The new adjustment states that: “A player in an offside position shall be penalised if he: Makes an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball.”
Essentially, if a player in an offside position makes a move for the ball, an offside will be called, regardless of if he touches the ball or not.
An incident which fits the bill perfectly is Juan Mata’s goal for Manchester United against Stoke City last season.
Mata curled a free-kick in to the net and the goal was allowed despite Marcos Rojo – who was in an offside position – attempting to head the cross in but missed.
According to the new modifications, a similar goal will be ruled offside.
