There are reports currently circulating that the burial of the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, is on hold.

This is said to be as a result of the Ooni’s Abobaku fleeing the town.

The Abobaku is a title that means “The one who dies with the king”.

The Abobaku is a person that is appointed upon a king’s coronation, to be buried with the king when he eventually dies.

His job is to serve the king and attend to him in the afterlife.

Given the severity of this position, the Abobaku leads an affluent life, taking care of the king and enjoying numerous benefits in the town.

The Oba’s death in London had allowed word of his demise to filter around, and this reportedly gave the Abobaku ample time to flee.

  1. This is a very terrible practice in a 21st century Nigeria. I could have sworn that such a thing can never happen in present day Nigeria. This act of Barbarism must stop.

  2. According to an eye witness that is familiar with this development, The Abobaku was last seen crossing Seme Border to Republic of Benin…lol
