Portugal defender, Fabio Coentrao has told Real Madrid to allow him leave the club this season as he goes in search of more playing time.
Coentrao has played second fiddle to Marcelo since his arrival from Benfica in 2012. The Portuguese left back has grown tired of a role on the Real Madrid bench and has asked Real Madrid for a transfer. Coentrao knows he is second best and did not give Real Madrid an ultimatum as he just asked for a transfer sighting the need for playing time as the Euro 2016 is fast approaching. Coentrao wants to stay fit and ensure a place in the Portugal squad and is looking to ensure that he can make the move as soon as possible. Coentrao managed only 17 appearances for the club last season in all competitions and you get the feeling that for a player of his quality that is too few.
Real Madrid are yet to comment on the situation involving Coentrao but a lot of clubs are already lining up for his signature, Benfica and Lyon have both indicated interest in Coentrao but his biggest suitor has to be Chelsea and Jose Mourinho as the Portuguese trainer has worked with Coentrao during his time at Real Madrid and is a fan of Coentrao’s pedal to the metal style of play. Looking at Chelsea’s style of play, you can’t help but notice how Coentrao’s style would be a perfect fit for Mourinho’s aggressive footballing philosophy.
