Flibanserin: Women Can Now Take Viagra – FDA

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has on Wednesday approved the use of female Viagra, ‘flibanserin’ (Addyi) to treat acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women.

Prior to Addyi’s approval, there were no FDA-approved treatments for sexual desire disorders in men or women.

According to FDA report, the drug is to be sold under the brand name Adyyi.

The product will only be available through specially certified healthcare pharmacies and professionals; and a boxed warning highlighting its side-effects will also be placed on its pack.

Flibanserin is the first drug to treat hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) – a persistent lack of libido or sexual desire in premenopausal women. It was developed by Sprout Pharmaceuticals.

Some of the side effects include; low pressure and fainting especially when taken with alcohol.
