The third time is really a charm. Barcelona have finally gotten one over Atletico Bilbao this season at the third time of asking and in doing so, got their La Liga defense off to a winning start.
Barcelona had surprisingly failed to beat Atletico Bilbao over two legs in the Supercopa Espana, losing one game and drawing the other, conceding 5 goals in the process, four of those in the first leg alone and scoring just once. This time however, Barcelona put all the negatives behind them, controlled the game and got a solitary goal to seal a good display despite Lionel Messi missing a penalty.
Barcelona controlled the game from the blast of the whistle but Atletico defended very deep and very well. Barcelona must have thought they would get the lead in the 31st minute when the referee pointed to the spot after Suarez went down in the box. Lionel Messi however missed the resulting penalty as it was saved by Iraizoz. There was no stopping Suarez in the 56th minute however as his shot from 8 yards following a Jordi Alba cross went right into the roof of the net to give Barcelona the lead. Suarez’s strike was the deciding factor in the game as Barcelona ran out 1-0 winners/
There is a little concern for Barcelona as Dani Alves left the pitch injured in the 19th minute. However, for Barcelona fans, it’s sweet revenge tonight.
